4.An area rug has a central 5 m by 3 m rectangle in a mosaic pattern, with
a plain border of uniform width around it.The total area of the rug is 24
m^2(24 meters squared).Find the width of the border?
If w = the width of the border, then the whole rug is
dimensions are
(2w + 5)(2w + 3) since the border is on both sides of the pattern.
Multiply this out, make it equal to 24, simplify and make equal to zero,
then factor.
x represents width of border
(5+2x)•(3+2x) = 24
15 + 10x + 6x + 4x^2 = 24 [distribute]
4x^2 + 16x -9 = 0 [factor by grouping]
(2x-1)•(2x+9) = 0 [solve for 0]
x = 1/2 | x = -9/2
width is 1/2m
1m by 1m
its 6 by 4 because 6*4=24
so 6-5=1 by 4-3=1
(1/2) meter
